A Friendly Reminder on Pet Safety and Property Boundaries

We want to ensure that our neighborhood is safe for everyone, including our four-legged friends. We’ve had several residents reach out recently regarding pets being off-leash and wandering onto other people’s lawns and driveways. To ensure we’re providing everyone with the most accurate information, the Board contacted Brevard County Animal Enforcement to clarify local laws and how they apply to our neighborhood.

Our goal is to keep our community a respectful and safe place for everyone to enjoy. Please take a moment to review these Brevard county-standard requirements:

  • Private Property Boundaries: Please keep in mind that the area from the sidewalk to a neighbor’s home is private property. Pets should not be wandering onto a neighbor’s lawn or driveway at any time.
  • Leash Requirements: For the safety of everyone, all pets must be on a handheld lead that is 6 feet or less in length.
  • No Retractable Leashes: These are not permitted for use in the neighborhood. Because they often extend well beyond 6 feet, they do not provide the “immediate physical control” required by the county and are considered a violation of restraint laws.
  • “At Large” Pets: Legally, any pet off the owner’s property and not properly restrained on a 6-foot fixed lead is considered “at large.”

How to Report an Issue

While we always hope neighbors can resolve things personally, Animal Enforcement has confirmed that residents can report recurring issues or unsecured animals directly to their office:
